CNC machining

What is machining?

Machining refers to a set of techniques used in the manufacture of mechanical parts. These techniques are used to manufacture precise components by removing material from a part, usually using machine tools. The end result is a specific part known for its high level of precision.

In the field of machining, all stages in the manufacture of mechanical parts are grouped under this term, and Luxmeca is deeply involved in these processes. Machining encompasses a wide range of techniques, some computer-aided, others manual. The basic principle of machining is to shape raw materials into the desired form by removing material using machine tools. It’s a combination of two movements: cutting speed and feed rate.

Machining plays a crucial role as one of the phases in the production of a part. It is based on detailed plans specifying the dimensions and functions of each surface in the room in question. These functions define tolerances, final dimensions and surface roughness requirements. The specific shapes of the surfaces to be machined, whether flat or rounded, are determined by the customer and the end user. Milling and turning are the main machining techniques, often carried out using a large number of CNC machines.

Machining offers a wide range of material removal techniques, including milling and turning, which can be applied to almost any type of material.

The different machining processes

There are many different machining processes. Each technique has its own particularities and different final renderings. The main processes are milling and turning.

Milling

Milling is a machining process involving the removal of material. This method uses a milling machine. Material is removed in the form of chips during milling. This technique is based on a combination of two factors: the rotation of the cutting tool and the cutting speed of the workpiece.

Turning

Turning is also a machining process. Its aim is to produce cylindrical and conical final parts. The machine that cuts the material is called a lathe. The part is tensioned and then rotated. Part rotation and speed combine to remove material from the part.
